Journey through time with author L. Harvey Kirk III as he explores the Kirk family-- its origin, descendants, occupations, businesses, and residences-- and its impact on Cecil County, Maryland and Chester County, Pennsylvania. Harvey Kirk will trace the Kirks from its earliest documented family members in England in 1658, through the North of Ireland and on to America... first to the Wilmington, Delaware area in 1688, and then subsequent family members' journey into our region as early as 1712. Properties throughout Cecil and Chester Counties will be discussed, stretching from Cecil County areas such as Blue Ball, Calvert, Rising Sun, Farmington, and College Green to Nottingham and Oxford, Pennsylvania. Family names familiar to our area and intertwined with the Kirk family will be included in the presentation: Brown, Gatchell, Haines, Hughes, England, and Reynolds.
About Author L. Harvey Kirk III L. Harvey Kirk III is a civil engineer with experience in surveying and mapping, engineering design and construction, mining, mineral mining, and heavy industry. He has managed technical processes and workforces, investigated fatal, serious injury and property damage industrial accidents, testified as an expert witness, worked in government service and held elective office. He has authored, edited and peer-reviewed papers, technical journal articles, and multiple chapters in manufacturing manuals. Harvey has spoken at technical conferences, written and narrated scripts for training videos, and published and lectured on the engineering aspects of occupational safety and health. His work has been used in the U.S. and over fifty foreign countries.
Harvey's father introduced him to family genealogy and photography, both of which he as pursued as hobbies, and which, in concert with his engineering background, he has merged creatively over the last twenty years. Since 1999 he has researched, written and heavily illustrated the multi-volume anthology of the Kirk family. West by North East, published in mid-to-late 2019, chronicles a dozen-plus generations of coopers, weavers, millers, farmers, storekeepers, postmasters, state and national legislators, doctors, soldiers, engineers, and etc.
Beginning in 1658 on the Moors of N. Yorkshire, England, West by North East follows the Kirks to and through the North of Ireland, and then on to America in 1688 and the early 1700s. The family established itself in the nexus of Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, and then spread west across the country. Kirk has authored:
